What to Expect at Your First Pottery Class

You have been thinking about trying pottery. Maybe for weeks, maybe since someone mentioned it at dinner, maybe since you saw a reel of someone shaping a bowl and thought "that looks incredibly satisfying." Whatever brought you here, welcome. Here is exactly what happens when you walk through our door in La Barceloneta for the first time.

You do not need to know anything

We mean it. You do not need to have touched clay before, or be "good with your hands," or have any kind of artistic background. Most people who come to La Mesa for the first time have zero experience with ceramics. You are not the exception — you are the norm. And that is completely fine.

We are not a school and we are not going to grade you. We are a space where you come to try things, get messy, make mistakes, and have a good time. We are here to guide you, not to evaluate you. Think of it less like a class and more like spending a couple of hours doing something genuinely enjoyable with your hands.

What to bring (spoiler: nothing)

Everything is included. The clay, the tools, the glazes, the kiln firings — all of it. The only thing we ask is that you wear clothes you do not mind getting a little dirty, although honestly, clay washes out pretty easily. If you want to bring your own apron, great. If not, we have some here. The important thing is that you arrive with curiosity and zero pressure.

What happens during the two hours

When you arrive at the studio — Carrer de l'Atlantida 47, right in the heart of La Barceloneta — we welcome you, show you around, and give you a spot at the table. Yes, a literal table. It is the first thing you see: a big wooden table where everyone works together. That is La Mesa.

We spend the first few minutes explaining the basics: how to prepare the clay, what techniques you will use, and what your options are. At La Mesa we work with high-temperature stoneware, which means your pieces will be strong, functional, and ready for everyday use.

Then you start creating. In a two-hour session you can make one or two pieces — a bowl, a cup, a small plate, whatever you feel like. There is no mandatory project. You decide what you want to make and we guide you through it step by step. Hand-building techniques like pinching, coiling, and slab work are all on the table, and we will help you pick the one that suits what you want to create.

While you work, things happen around you. People talk, laugh, concentrate, share tricks they just discovered. Music plays in the background. Someone asks a question and everyone at the table ends up learning something. That is the atmosphere at La Mesa: relaxed, real, unpretentious. And because our community is international, you will hear conversations in English, Spanish, Catalan, and plenty of other languages. No need to speak Spanish — you will feel right at home.

What happens to your pieces afterwards

When you finish your piece, we let it dry for a few days. Then it goes into the kiln for the first firing — called bisque. After that, if you like, you can glaze it in another session and choose from our range of colours. Then it goes back in the kiln for the final firing. All of this is included in the price. No extra costs, no surprises, no fine print.

The whole process takes about three to four weeks. We message you on WhatsApp when your pieces are ready to pick up. And that is when the real magic happens: seeing something you made with your own hands turned into a real, beautiful object you can use every single day.

What if I love it and want to keep going?

You can. We have weekly classes — a fixed session once a week, two hours, 120 euros per month — where you progress at your own pace within a regular group. We also have drop-in sessions if you prefer something more flexible, and wheel-throwing options if you are curious about the potter's wheel. You can explore all our ceramics class options in this guide.

But let us not get ahead of ourselves. The first step is the simplest one: come in, try it, and then decide.
